Ras Dizzy
Ras Dizzy was born Birth Livingstone, the exact date and place of his birth uncertain, but believed to be 1936. The self-taught painter
and self-styled poet has been described by the critic and museum director David Boxer as “a man who seemingly lives and paints at the very edge of what we might call sane/rational existence, and consequently ‘comes and goes’ as an
artist...Dizzy’s paintings are, in fact, down to earth, raw visions of everyday reality seen through the special surreal filter that is the ‘Dizzy Mind’ “. He has been hailed for his visual poetry, his strong, bold strokes and his strong
sense of color.
A very productive and highly inventive artist, Dizzy paints many subjects and revisits them often. He often paints himself in roles he believes he has led in a consistently drawn parallel universe. These persona have
included the star sherrif in a Western movie, a boxer, a great cricketer, a racehorse jockey, as well as the great gunman, Birch Lincoln. His paintings of imagined boxing matches and horse races usually include, on the reverse side, a
written trabscription of how a radio announcer might have called the event. His other recurring subjects include birds, palms, courthouse scenes, and of course people: queens, preachers, angels, actors, singers and politicians.
Ras
Dizzy has exhibited in exhibitions in Jamaica, the US and Germany. These include
“The Intuitive Eye”, National Gallery of Jamaica, 1979; “Rastafarian Kunst”, Haus der Kulturen der Wilt, Beklisand, Stuttgard, Germany, 1992; “Redemption Songs: The Self-Taught Artists of Jamaica”, Diggs Gallery, Winston-Salem, NC.
The artist and his work have been featured in a number of publications and his work is widely collected.
